MKE Tech Hub Coalition Will Lead Summerfest Tech Into Its 10th Year

Milwaukee World Festival has produced Summerfest Tech since 2018. Going into the conference's 10th year, the MKE Tech Hub Coalition takes the lead on planning, programming, sponsorships, and marketing. Here is what the expanded partnership changes, and why it matters outside Milwaukee.

Milwaukee World Festival has produced Summerfest Tech since the conference started in 2018. That changes going into 2027.

On September 1, Summerfest Tech and the MKE Tech Hub Coalition announced an expanded partnership to co-produce the conference as it heads into its 10th year.

What's actually changing

Under the new structure, MKE Tech Hub Coalition leads overall event planning, programming, sponsorships, and marketing. Milwaukee World Festival stays involved on planning, sponsorships, and marketing, and keeps working on integrations between Summerfest and Summerfest Tech.

So the nonprofit that exists to connect southeast Wisconsin's tech ecosystem is now the one steering the region's biggest tech conference.

This isn't a cold handoff. MKE Tech has been part of Summerfest Tech for years through financial support, strategic collaboration, and programming. The mentorship circles that pair founders with regional leaders came out of that partnership, and so did the workforce skilling workshops. In 2026 they added networking experiences powered by Sit By Me and a team of MKE Tech Navigator volunteers whose whole job was helping attendees make real connections on site.

Sarah Pancheri, President and CEO of Milwaukee World Festival, framed the expansion as a way to elevate the conference and position Milwaukee and the Midwest as a technology destination, and credited MKE Tech as instrumental to the conference's success. Joe Poeschl, Executive Director of MKE Tech Hub Coalition, described Summerfest Tech as doing exactly what his organization exists to do, connecting talent, accelerating innovation, and telling southeast Wisconsin's story to the world.

Why this matters if you're not in Milwaukee

Summerfest Tech started as a two-hour event for about 50 community stakeholders. This year it pulled more than 3,300 registrations from 33 states and nearly 60 sponsors, its strongest year yet.

Thirty-three states. That is not a Milwaukee room anymore, and it hasn't been for a while.

For founders in Green Bay, La Crosse, Eau Claire, and everywhere in between, the useful read is who controls the programming now. Conference programming set by an ecosystem organization tends to look different from programming set by an event producer. MKE Tech's version of Summerfest Tech has already leaned toward mentorship, skilling, and structured connection instead of stages alone.

I don't know yet what that means for statewide representation on the 2027 agenda. Nothing about that has been announced. But the org making those calls runs FOR-M for early-stage startups, Catalyze for enterprise tech leadership, Synapse for AI advisory, and the FUSE AI Bootcamp on college campuses. Programming is the thing they do.

Milwaukee's institutions have been building this kind of connective tissue for a while. It's a theme that came up when I talked with Jessica Silvaggi about turning UW Milwaukee research into startups, where the gap was never good ideas. It was matchmaking.

What to watch for

Dates for the 2027 conference will be announced in the coming months and will line up with the 2027 festival. Programming details usually follow. Summerfest Tech has historically included speakers from local, regional, and national stages plus a cash-prize pitch competition, so if you have something to pitch or something to teach, that's your window.

Ten years is a real milestone for any Wisconsin event. This one hits it with the ecosystem holding the wheel.
