Six Wisconsin Startups Building the State's Frontier Tech Future

Six Wisconsin startups were selected for the inaugural gBETA Frontier Technology accelerator. Here's what each one is building, and how to see them pitch on September 2.

Ask most people what gets built in Wisconsin and you'll hear the same three answers. Cheese. Beer. Machinery.

Nobody says quantum error correction hardware.

But that's what a Madison company called QEC Labs is working on right now, and it's one of six Wisconsin startups selected for the inaugural gBETA Frontier Technology accelerator. The cohort covers quantum computing, semiconductors, wireless power, AI-driven materials discovery, and two medical devices. All six are based here.

That last part is the whole point.

Wisconsin never had a research problem

We've had a commercialization problem.

UW-Madison, Marquette, UW-Milwaukee, and WARF have been producing frontier technology for decades. The gap has always come later: after the paper gets published and before anyone figures out who would pay for it. Technical founders are usually excellent at the hard part and completely on their own for the rest.

The Wisconsin Frontier Technology Consortium exists to close that gap. It's led by the Wisconsin Technology Council and pulls together UW-Madison, the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, gener8tor, Waukesha County Technical College, and the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce, funded through a Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation Ignite grant.

That's six institutions that don't normally coordinate, agreeing to coordinate. If you've spent any time in ecosystem work, you know how rare that actually is.

The accelerator is the first thing that consortium built that founders can walk into.

So what is the program?

Seven weeks, free, and zero equity. It's operated by gener8tor and hosted at Waukesha County Technical College's Pewaukee campus, with Pushkaraj Kalkar running it as program manager. He was hired in June specifically to help technical founders bridge the distance between a working prototype and a paying customer.

Founders get one-on-one coaching, weekly mentor swarms, and access to gener8tor's national network of mentors, customers, corporate partners, and investors. The program closes with an investor swarm and a public showcase.

The zero-equity model is worth pausing on, because it keeps showing up in the programs that work. Kai Heineman explained the same logic to me when we talked about how Creative Destruction Lab builds startups without taking equity. When the program doesn't own a piece of you, the incentive is just to make you better.

Meet the six companies

Here's what each one is building. I pulled the details from Anna Lardinois's reporting at MKE Startup News, plus each company's own materials.

QEC Labs

Quantum computers make errors constantly, and correcting those errors fast enough is one of the biggest obstacles between quantum computing and anything practical. QEC Labs builds hardware-native decoders that do the correction in real time, at sub-microsecond latency, across GPU, FPGA, and ASIC systems.

The Madison company was founded by Nithin Raveendran, PhD, a quantum error-correction scientist, and Bane Vasic, PhD, who directs the Error Correction Laboratory at the University of Arizona and leads error correction theory at the Fermilab-led Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center.

MaxWave

MaxWave sends power through the air over long distances. No cables, no docking, no swapping batteries. The company builds millimeter-wave wireless power subsystems, and the first target is drones, which currently spend a frustrating share of their operational life sitting on the ground charging. Defense, agriculture, infrastructure inspection, and logistics are all on the list after that.

Founder and CEO Mirhamed Mirmozafari, PhD, pitched the company at the Greater Madison Chamber's 2025 Pressure Chamber competition, where he described tracking a drone in flight and beaming power to it from up to a kilometer away. Also on that stage that day: Christina Henderson of Reliable Residence, who came on the podcast to talk about solving the healthcare housing problem.

Neurlogix

Draining cerebrospinal fluid is a manual, high-stakes process in hospitals today. The lumbar and external ventricular drainage systems in use now require labor-intensive leveling by hand, and they can't compensate when a patient moves. Neurlogix built an electronic device that automates the process, aiming at better patient safety and lower cost.

It's led by Ron Sliwinski. The company doesn't have a website yet, though there's a Creative Destruction Lab profile with more on the device.

Ubivital

Cancer patients on chemotherapy need their white blood cell counts checked constantly, and every check today means a needle. Ubivital developed a smartphone-based device that reads white blood cell levels from a 60-second fingertip scan instead.

The technology came out of the Ubicomp Lab at Marquette University, led by Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed, PhD. Marquette's own write-up of the research describes a patented system that uses a smartphone camera with a blue-light filter to read blood markers off the surface of a fingertip.

If you want a picture of how much sits inside Wisconsin's university labs waiting for someone to commercialize it, this is a good one. Jessica Silvaggi makes the same case about turning UW-Milwaukee research into startups.

Autonomous Materials Labs

Developing a new alloy can take a decade. The bottleneck isn't ideas. It's the speed of physical experimentation: synthesize a sample, send it out for characterization, wait, adjust the composition, repeat.

Autonomous Materials Labs is building self-driving labs that close that loop with no human in the middle, compressing alloy and ceramic development from decades down to months or weeks. The targets are the industries where materials are the hard ceiling on what's technically possible: fusion energy, hypersonic flight, aerospace, and defense.

The Madison company was founded by Lianyi Chen, PhD, Ali Nabaa, and CEO Benjamin Patrick Bremmer. Chen is the Kuo K. and Cindy F. Wang Associate Professor of mechanical engineering at UW-Madison, and Nabaa is a PhD student in his lab. That kind of faculty-founder path is exactly what Jon Eckhardt is trying to widen with the Founder Forward vision for UW-Madison.

Arctic Flame

Arctic Flame is developing novel semiconductor technology aimed at making computers faster while bringing cost down. The Milwaukee company is led by Tryggvi Theodorsson. It's the quietest of the six, with no website and no coverage I could turn up, which isn't unusual this early in semiconductors.

Semiconductors, in Milwaukee. Read the list again and tell me the state's ceiling is where people think it is.

What this cohort actually signals

Six companies is a small number. I'm not going to pretend one cohort rewrites the state's economy.

But frontier tech is the hardest category to build a company in. The timelines are long, the capital is patient or nonexistent, and the founders are often researchers who've never sold anything. Programs like this usually don't exist in states our size, and when they do, they tend to fill their first cohort with companies from somewhere else.

This one didn't. Every company is Wisconsin-based, which means the applicant pool was deep enough to be selective. That's the part I'd point to.

The next question is capital, because coaching gets a company investor-ready and then somebody has to actually invest. And Jessica Martin Eckerly's work on giving Wisconsin biotech founders lab space to start in is the same problem from the infrastructure side.

Accelerator, lab space, capital, customers. You need all four. We're further along on some than others.
